Five Silver Davey Awards honor ultra-creative ad group at MDS


Next week when five Hollywood-style silver Davey Awards arrive, MDS will once again need to expand its awards cabinets. In total for 2006, MDS Advertising won 19 awards out of the 23 entries submitted to prestigious national and international advertising competitions—earning nine Tellys; two Summits; three Addy awards and with their most recent win, five Davey Awards.

Austin, TX—New clients first meet the MDS creative team in the ad agency’s futuristic, glass-walled conference room. The room floats out from the agency’s minimalist, multi-level office building, and overlooks a park-like 10 acre setting. Plasma television screens, sliding glass walls that retract at the touch of a button, sleek environmental design and Star-Trek style furnishings contrast with the rugged natural scenery. A collection of award trophies won in the ad industry’s top competitions glitters in the glass-shelved niches that seem to levitate in the curved corners of the room.

A first visit to MDS is impressive and instructive; clearly this low-profile Austin agency is into generating big creative and total brand personality built on deep-reaching marketing strategy. They demonstrably do it for their clients—and for themselves.

The proof, as the saying goes, is in the pudding—and, in the case of MDS, proof of its passion for design excellence shows in every detail of its sophisticated environment, work portfolio, and its ever expanding awards collection.

“Our agency has a sincere passion for creative excellence and record breaking marketing results,” says Hubbard. “We invest the maximum creative effort to achieve our goals,” Hubbard continues, making it clear that MDS does not spare the creative juices whatever the size of its client or project. “MDS won awards in 2006 for creative work for some of our biggest—and our smallest accounts,” he says.

MDS took top honors in annual report design for a $20-billion university fund management company that is one of the nation’s largest; won awards for campaigns that drove $1.5 billion in annual sales for a condominium and real estate giant; and took brand and package design awards for a startup organic cookie company.

“Even though they were small, we created a big, ‘primal’ brand and package design for them. Now they’re out there and getting pretty famous,” says Hubbard.

“We like to be there at the beginning; we understand brand building, and we know we can make the most profound difference for our clients when we get to envision their brand from conception.’

“One of my favorite examples of the power of MDS creative is our work for Montecito Property Company. We drove a lot of business for Montecito; in all, we successfully brought 22 large-scale condominium resort communities to market last year,” he says. MDS moved at warp speed on each property, hitting a 90-day window from acquisition to grand opening. Many of the properties sold out in days. “We sold out at least five of their biggest developments in 24-hours or less,” Hubbard continues. “But our most intense success story happened on the Saturday morning we sold out a $90-million property in 91 minutes.”
